Thu 13 February 2020 - 20:30

n the jazz series of LoburgLive, double bassist Jasper Somsen receives saxophonist Toon Roos and pianist Juraj Stanik on Thursday evening 13 February, at 8.30 pm.

Bird and Wessel Ilcken (now Boy Edgar) Prize winner Toon Roos is considered by many to be one of the best soprano and tenor saxophonists in Europe and praised for his lyrical, intuitive and balanced way of playing. He has performed and recorded with many jazz greats including Joe Zawinul, Peter Erskine, Alex Acuna, John Scofield, Toots Thielemans and Ivan Lins. Toon has developed his own style by playing different music styles from the very beginning, from the big band swing to bebop and hard bop, from bossa nova to funk and fusion. He has toured all over the world and has recorded several albums as a band leader, band member or guest soloist. For twenty years he was one of the star soloists of The Dutch Jazz Orchestra conducted by Jerry van Rooijen. In 2009, the Toon Roos Quartet toured Europe as support act for Steely Dan, and played on world-renowned venues such as the Hammersmith Apollo in London and the Olympia in Paris.

Juraj Stanik is one of the best kept secrets among the Dutch Jazz pianists. Juraj became known in the 90s through his collaborations with, among others, Benjamin Herman & Jasper Blom in the highly acclaimed band Five Up High, Toon Roos, Ben van den Dungen / Jarmo Hoogendijk Quintet, John Engels, Evelien Carels (former Candy Dulfer) and his duo with master trumpet player Ack van Rooyen.

Since 2014, Jazz In Wageningen and LoburgLive have been organizing jazz concerts on Thursday evenings in Café Loburg. Jasper Somsen invites the best Dutch jazz musicians in constantly surprising compositions.
